Went up yesterday after I got a call from a guy saying that he broke his MJ on Slaughterhouse. What had happened was that he didn't properly weld his spring perches when he went SOA, the welds broke, and the rear axle rotated up. This broke his driveshaft off of the yoke, snapping all the strap bolts as well as the ujoint, and damaged the shocks. We ended up using a scissor jack to reset the pinion angle and then tightened the ubolts as much as possible and used almost no throttle to idle out of the trail without putting stress on the broken perches. Its hard to see in the pics, but he has some bad spring wrap and the SOA was only completed a few weeks ago, I wonder if the perches shearing off damaged the leaves.

On to the pics:

That's very cool of you to help someone like that. A lot of lessons can be learned by helping others off the trail. 8-)

First lesson: If you break down, cross your fingers it is a warm spring day for the trail repair!

Must have been very cold, James, to crawl under there and figure out the best approach to fix it, and then to actually fix it. How long did it take to get him off the trail?

Good work!

Good work!

It took about an hour to perform the repair and then another hour or so to carefully drive it out without putting any stress on the rear axle. It would have been way less stressful if we would have been able to leave the rear driveshaft out and just use the front diff on his MJ and a strap in the tough places, but without an SYE, he was loosing ATF like crazy. I'm very happy that this setup didn't let loose again on a hill climb. The bummer of the situation is that after we had completed the repair and got him off the trail, a heater hose blew within miles of his house, talk about some bad luck!
This picture is insightful as to what happened:

Way to go out and save a buddy on the trail! Looks like you guys figured out what needed to be done, got it done safely, and got home! Nice work.

I remember running Boulder Carnage a couple of years ago. We had a guy with an early Bronco that broke a rear centering pin. It never lead to that kind of carnage but it could have very easily.
